Ladies of Learning is a mentoring program in which selected parenting female students gain post-secondary education and college exposure to mentors, speakers and administrators. These mentors serve as excellent models who have come from similar backgrounds and have gone on to attain masters or doctorate degrees in their fields of study.
Students gain awareness in the areas of goal setting, college essay writing, career exploration, financial aid, and more. Participants have the chance to work directly with staff members to understand expectations and enhance college readiness. Students come from various Philadelphia public high schools to interact with community college and Communities In Schools staff during the school year in sessions on two campuses. The seminar series culminates in a ceremony with esteemed local leaders, who share their paths to success.
Participants often attend the Community College of Philadelphia or other accredited post-secondary institutions after graduating. Created in 2002, Ladies of Learning is a partnership between Communities In Schools of Philadelphia’s ELECT program and Community College of Philadelphia.
